There are 65 million girls worldwide who are fighting for access to education. Every October 11, on the International Day of the Girl Child, Plan International publishes a report on the global status of girls — a report that many girls have no chance of reading themselves.
Our challenge was to create awareness of this important report. Would it be possible to make the content so compelling that the public would be willing to pay for it?
We set up an installation in which we published the report one word at a time. Every donation, every tweet, and every Facebook share published the words of the report. Visitors could donate by SMS at the installation, or by a website which showed the report printing and tracked the word count in real time.
The full report of 74,180 words was printed within a week.
